What Is Scutellaria Baicalensis Extract?

The product is a standardized botanical substance prepared from dried roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Chinese Skullcap). The extract is rich in bioactive flavonoids, mainly Baicalin (CAS: 21967-41-9), Baicalein and Wogonin, with multi-target pharmacological effects.

It inhibits COX-2 and NF-κB pathways, reducing IL-6 and TNF-α cytokines, without the adverse effects of corticosteroids, unlike synthetic alternatives. FAQ

Q: How do you get around "solubility problems" in aqueous formulations?

A: High purity Baicalin (≥85%) is poorly soluble in water. First dissolve in Butylene Glycol or Propanediol, or neutralize with Arginine to make a water-soluble salt. This gives unambiguous solutions with preserved bioactivity.

Q: Why do the final goods change colors?

A: Baicalin's phenolic structure chelates metal ions such as iron and copper, giving green/brown coloring. Add chelating agents (e.g. Disodium EDTA) and keep pH between 5.0-6.5 to avoid oxidation.

Q: Is this extract Niacinamide friendly?

A: Yes, it is synergistic. Niacinamide blocks transfer of melanosomes and Baicalin inhibits tyrosinase. Final pH must be maintained to avoid Niacinamide hydrolysis and Baicalin precipitation.

Q: What's the difference between Baicalin and Baicalein?

A: Baicalin (glycoside) is the standardized extract form with better stability. Upon oral ingestion, gut microflora convert it to Baicalein (aglycone), which has higher permeability. For topical use, both forms are effective.
